Hi,

Can anybody tell me the moisture holding capacity of all the 6 main soil types: clay, sand, silt, peat, chalk, loam?

Also, does anybody know of any research or information on the sensitivity of the different soil types to climate change?

Many thanks
Eva

Hi,
The garden in my new home is covered in gravel (on top of black, plastic sheeting). I have removed this as I want to plant the area. There is a thin layer of builders sand under the black plastic - can I mix this with the soil underneath or should I remove it? I seem to recall that there is something in builders sand which will burn grass if put on a lawn, so will it harm plants if I mix it through the soil?
Also, the soil has been under the black plastic for 6 years, so after...

As a exhibition leek grower ,I tested the pH level in my leek trench , it ranged from 5 to 6 wich is slightly acidic, the ideal level should be 7 wich is nuetral . I know adding lime raises the level but this takes time . Has any one got any quick and safe way to do this without damaging the plants. Cheers hock1961

Hi all

I'm looking for some information on typical soil mass per cubic metre. Can anyone help? Ideally, I'm after a range of masses for different soil types, eg. clay 1.2-1.5 tons per m^3, but really anything will do as a starting point. Since this is for my thesis, I will also require a reference of some kind to the source of information if possible.

Also, I'm aware that these figures will vary greatly between dry and wet samples. For preference I'd like some figures for...
